About Old Biloxi Recipes Cookbooks

How It Got Started

In May 2009, after Hurricane Katrina, Sonya Fountain Miller and John Gutierrez were talking about recipes with other friends on Facebook.  Many local families had lost their treasured recipes and cookbooks and Sonya thought that it would be wonderful to have a place where friends could share their old family recipes.  John set up a Facebook page for her on the topic and it soared!  Ten years later, the Old Biloxi Recipes page has over 42,000 "likes," among the most of all the Biloxi related pages on Facebook.

Cookbooks

Although the Old Biloxi Recipes Facebook page was a community for sharing recipes, Sonya began to get repeated requests for the cookbooks.  She had to explain that there weren't any cookbooks but that the Facebook page was an online community and the recipes could be printed out.  Eventually, she realized the demand for printed books of these recipes was too great so she began to combine the recipes into 3 volumes of cookbooks.  The recipes in the cookbooks derives mostly from local family recipes that's been handed down from generation to generation and recipes from beloved older local restaurants that are no longer in business.  Most of the restaurant recipes were shared by owners, managers, chefs, and customers who requested the recipes years ago.

Shortly after the first volume of Old Biloxi Recipes cookbook was printed, Sonya was contacted by SunHerald, our local newspaper, and by South Mississippi Living magazine to do feature articles!  What an honor!
